Rot Repair

The “new” siding after rot repair.

This deck suffers numerous moisture issues. It sits under the drip edge of a metal roof so not only does it get splash from rain but also piles of snow that stack up especially in this corner. Although the siding is western red cedar, the moisture had worked through it and even rotted the rot resistant wood. The solutions are many here though invisible. All was stripped off, right down to the studs, with insulation replaced, new pressure treated plywood and Grace and Water Shield applied over a new drip cap protecting the ledger. The grates help reduce splash and let the water go through to the lower story. Where the deck meets the wall in the center of the photo I cut away the ends of the deck boards to allow more open space for the water to pass through there. You can see the new pressure treated joist that holds them up at the end of the grate. I didn’t take enough photos to tell the whole story but here are a few more.

Another part of the project was removing the rotted bottoms of screened panels on the screen porch and replacing them with pressure treated wood. I also replaced some of the screens.
