Split Rail Fence

Split rail fenceSplit Rails is both good-looking and acts as a divider. The product is actually not split at all but rather sawn to look like split rails. It is a pressure treated product so it is almost safe to assume it is southern yellow pine. The intent was to use a product that would last longer than an untreated wood. Time will tell.

The digging wasn’t particularly difficult though one hole aligned perfectly with a large boulder so the solution was to cut the rails short for that section so the post would miss the rock. In spots, around 16″ down, there was a layer of dense clay which would explain why perk tests often fail in the area. Posts were buried 20″ with 20″ exposed to the bottom of the lower rail pocket.
