Removing the 2×12

  1. This shot really shows how the weight of the addition had mashed the beam down over a post. The 2×12 visible here was the only remaining part of the support beam. The 2 members on the inside were rotted long ago and the 2×12 was added to do the job of supporting the the wall. The trouble with this patch is that it may have held up the wall but the floor joists were still nailed to what was left of the old beam so they continued to sag even though the wall was supported. Well, supported until it rotted too.
