I removed only a few studs at a time and replaced them with custom cut 3 3/4 inch studs to match the original wall thickness. The new wall would be far easier to find studs on the inside with the new consistent 24 inch layout. In the old wall, you never knew if you had found a vertical or a horizontal stud.
