This photos shows the post (vertical grain), the 2×12 (left, center greenish wood) and the original beam (top). It appears as though both beam parts are butted to the post from this perspective but this is not the case. The beam rests on top of the post and the upper right part of the post approximates its top. In fact the beam had become so soft from decay that the weight of the building had mashed it down over the top of the beam at least an inch.
