An old farmhouse suffering from lack of roof venting gets new gable end vents added. The challenge of this project was staging over the additions below the vents. Especially the metal roof was a test because the steep part could not be walked and I didn’t want to scratch any of it. Nail on brackets were the prefect solution though the west side had two layers of siding so locating a stud for secure attachment required some hunting. I added a long screw to accompany two heavy nails in attaching each of the brackets to resist the forces trying to pull the nails. Just the weight of the staging planks, my weight and tools applied nail pulling forces. The brackets proved to be secure and with secure staging the rest of the project was a breeze.
The vents were intended to be installed in a new building and sided around afterwards. Installing them in existing siding left a small gap at the bottom. To close this gap I cut a piece of clapboard the same width as the other vent trim and turned the taper up-side-down to make it look like a piece of trim.
