Renovation IV: Dormer Rebuild

Two layers of sheathing and siding as well as much of the framing had to be replaced.

Two layers of sheathing and siding as well as much of the framing had to be replaced.

Hard to understand why it was done but the dormers on this house appeared to have been in poor condition with rot damage at an earlier time but, rather than replacing the rotten wood, a new sheathing layer was added on top and new siding on top of that. It made for a greater depth of rot as the underlying rot had continued in the decomposition process though it was covered with new wood. When the cover up work failed, the decomposition really made quick progress as moisture again reached the pre-existing rot. A complication in the rebuild was to maintain the thickness of both layers of sheathing to get the windows to fit as planned.

Both dormers had inadequate venting with only two small soffit vents in the gable end siding. None of the siding was salvageable so these were removed and proper venting was applied with both soffit vents and ridge vents.
