Porch Repaired and Roofed

This roof had been neglected for quite some time before the new owner contracted Doug Martin of Douglas Martin Furniture to repair it. Doug enlisted me to help with the project. Snow, ice and water had been pouring off a valley of the main roof and creating an over weight situation for the porch in winter and had actually broken a rafter. At some point the roofing failed and the water from the valley was keeping the porch roof and ceiling saturated. Actually the roofing had failed in numerous places over the porch roof as it was roofed with rolled roofing which has a relatively short life. The result required some new roof sheathing boards to replace the rotten ones.

We decided to use ice and water shield as underlayment because the pitch was so flat. Architect shingles were used for longevity and appearance. I improved the flashing arrangement where the roof met the walls of the house in a way that will make future roof replacements much easier. Doug fit the new rafter and added extras to help hold the extra snow load under the main roof valley. Some amazing ingenuity by Doug straightened the sag in the roof using shims and custom cut shadow and facia boards.
