This job was for an estimate I made several months ago. Fortunately the estimate was passed on to the new owner who called me and wanted the job done quickly. My schedule had just opened up so it worked out for all concerned. As you can see by the panoramic shot above it is an unusual shed roof that is hidden from the front by a peak roof that reaches the same height as the shed roof.
The old roofing came off quite easily and the wood under it was dry and in excellent shape so the project actually came in under my original estimate even though I spent several hours tacking down the shingles with roofing cement to abide by the manufacture’s cold weather instructions. This was not considered in my estimate made in the summer. See the roofing process in the gallery below.
- Not a bit of rot here.
- The valley was in good shape too.
- Staining from roofing tar painted over and under rolled roofing that was removed.
- The original flashing was in good shape.
- 1/2 inch plywood was soft underfoot but solid.
- First two courses of ice and water shield.
- Here all the roof has been covered with Ice and Water Shield and the owner helped me snap these chalk line guidelines. They were much more visible before a rain but enough remained to guide me.
- Roofing and carrying bundles up the ladder are underway.
- More than half done.
- Roofing meets the valley.
- The last singles to install were at the top of the valley.
- Valley cuts make a nice straight line.
- Ridge cap was preserved in the demo by removing only nails on one side. New vent pipe boot in foreground.
- The layout ended with a narrow strip that covered both the nails in the last course and nails holding down the flashing.
- All shingles installed.
