The T-111 siding and mysterious 2×12

  1. This beam, supported by the corner post (left) and the first support post (right), was completely rotted out to the point where there was not even any rotted wood left to decompose. If the 2×12 was added to take over support in this area, my question is why was there a break 3 ft. from the end instead of over the support post on the right? This break is at the end of two 16 ft long 2x12s so I can only assume the builder considered long length boards better than direct support by the posts. This arrangement makes a cantilevered beam extending 6 ft. beyond the post and leaving the last 3 ft. unsupported. The floor joists in this area had dropped more than anywhere else because the beam they were end nailed to had disintegrated.

  2. Also, the new support in this area truly did straighten the floors and the roofline!
