Another reason to remove it was that it jutted out from the main deck to wrap around where there once was a pool and looked a little silly with now pool anymore.

Also, the support post seen here was not below frost level so was heaving the house end of the deck. By removing it the deck settled down to the correct level on supporting beams that were carried by below frost posts.
