Varmint Proof Roof Vents

Soffit Vents

Wildlife is great when it is in the wild but when it moves in to our homes it is another matter. This home was invaded by raccoons more than once. The first time they scratched through the window screening used under the soffit vents on the front roof. The solution worked well. Custom made soffit vents were made to fit over the opening in the soffit and prevented raccoons from entering where they were used but they were not installed on the upper vent accessed from the rear roof. About a decade after installing the vents on all the soffits raccoons discovered they could enter by accessing the rear roof and through a similar vent at the top of the roof.

Louvered Round Vents

While installing the above vents I noticed the rear roof had upper vent holes with screening behind them. I imagined smaller rodents could easily gain access through these so I installed louvered hole vents to prevent this. You’d think these 2 inch vents would fit perfectly into 2″ holes but the wood had swelled and it turned out to be an extremely tight fit. The vents were made of aluminum so could not stand much hammering so I build a wooden driver with a recessed center so I was only pounding on the outside flange. It worked but the process took longer than expected. One good thing about that: they are not going to fall out!
